Tajweed, derived from the Arabic root ‘Jawwada’ meaning ‘to improve,’ refers to the set of rules governing the correct pronunciation of the Quranic letters and words. As the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, “The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it to others” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027). Learning Tajweed preserves the sanctity and correct meaning of the Quran, allowing us to recite it as it was revealed. As Ibn al-Jazari stated, “There is no doubt that the person who does not apply Tajweed to the Quran is a sinner because it was revealed with Tajweed.”
